Isis Sapp-Grant
While I was working as an after school art teacher at P.S. 261 in 2007, 2008 in downtown Brooklyn, I met Isis, her son was one of my students. She noticed a portrait of Bob Marley i was drawing and she told me she wanted me to work with her. Since then, I have considered her as a mentor and role model to me. I went onto work with her organization, Blossom, a program for young girls in Brooklyn. She started the program as a way to restitute and prevent other young women from joining gangs as she had in her past. She also took me to the NYC Woman’s Conference where I got to meet Mary J. Blige and many other influential women. When i left Brooklyn, i gave her my “Owl Goddess” painting because i knew she would give it a good home. I told her thank you for helping me and for all the opportunities she showed me to help me understand the importance of using my talent to make other people’s lives better. Later she thanked me with words that help me to this day.. “from one woman warrior to another, thank you.”
